Glen Ellyn Public Works is part of a dynamic organization located in the western suburbs of Chicago, serving a community of 29,000 residents. The Department is recruiting for a mechanic to be part of the team that oversees 200+ pieces of equipment from gas to diesel to electric and other alternative fuels that includes Public Works, Police, Fire Company, and GWA, among others.  This opportunity could be for a Mechanic II or III, depending on the skillset the right candidate brings to the table. The ideal applicant will have extensive experience with medium and heavy-duty trucks, possession of EVT certification is preferred. A willingness to learn new equipment and techniques, along with a desire to be part of a collaborative environment is essential for a candidate to succeed in this role. Position reports to the Superintendent of the Equipment Services Division (ESD).



  • Perform general overhaul and repair work on gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel vehicles that includes automobiles, trucks, tractors, police and fire apparatus, and other equipment overseen by the ESD.
  • Diagnose and repair highly technical electrical and electronic systems and components.
  • Install emergency equipment for emergency vehicles including on-board computers, GPS vehicle location systems, cellular modems, Wi-Fi, communication radios and antennas, emergency LED light bars and lighting, audio/video recording systems, electronic control systems, prisoner restraint systems, speed radar detection and traffic signal pre-emption.
  • Scan, diagnose and repair computerized electronic engine, electrical, transmission, and body control systems and components.
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain hydraulic and air brake systems.
  • Maintain diesel emission control systems and related components.
  • Ability to weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment for Village vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Inspect completed work for compliance with safety practices and requirements.
    Basic to intermediate knowledge of computers and software, with an ability to learn fleet specific programs.


The qualifications vary between the Mechanic II and III but at a minimum for a III, the candidate must either already possess EVT certification or ASE certification for medium & heavy-duty trucks with extensive emergency vehicle experience. The following list are some of the skills desired for either level:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, possession of an associate’s/bachelor’s degree or completion of an automotive or truck program preferred
  • Three to five (3-5) years of experience as a mechanic, preferably in a municipal setting, with a longer tenure expected for a Mechanic III
  • CDL class B driver’s license, with endorsements or ability to obtain within 1 year
  • EPA Certification to recover and recycle refrigerants or ability to obtain
  • Class C UST operator license, possession or ability to obtain
  • ICS 100 and 700 level training, obtained within 6 months if not already completed
  • Demonstrate an ability to use personal computers, diagnostic scanners, and software related to fleet maintenance

The duties of this job include physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, walking, lifting and/or moving (up to 75 pounds), grasping, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, and repetitive motions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus. Employee occasionally works around vibrations and noise, moving mechanical parts, confined spaces and underground trenches, heights, and is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme outdoor temperatures.  Work environment generally is within the municipal garage but can include working outdoors in various types of weather conditions or at offsite locations.


Work Schedule: The general work schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Must be able to respond to after-hours call-backs; prepare for and confront emergency conditions as necessary to maintain efficient and effective Village services, including being a key member of winter snow operations.



This is a non-exempt position. Salary range for a Mechanic II is $32.98 to $46.17 per hour and for a Mechanic III $34.64 to $48.50 per hour. Actual starting salary will be dependent upon qualifications.
