The Village of Glen Ellyn is a vibrant community with a population of just under 29,000 people in the far west suburbs of Chicago. Public Works plays a pivotal role in all facilities and building components across our Village locations. With the addition of a Facilities Superintendent, this role will entail maintaining, repairing, and implementing preventative maintenance for all village equipment and mechanical systems. Additionally, they will handle the planning, scheduling, and coordination of all Facility Capital Projects. The Facilities Superintendent is responsible for the supervision of both the maintenance and custodian divisions.

This position reports to the Assistant Public Works Director – Internal Services. Any candidate is expected to ensure the safety of both employees and visitors to the building, this position provides responsive, courteous, and efficient service to Village residents and the general public.



  • Plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, reviews, and evaluates the work of assigned staff and responsible for planning short-term and long-term facility improvements and completing a 5-Year plan annually.
  • Develops, maintains, and implements preventative maintenance programs for building MEP systems and associated equipment.
  • Schedules, plans, and coordinates all Capital projects; coordinates with contractors, vendors, and staff to complete projects.
  • Assume full responsibility for management and coordination of division responder emergency services.
  • Conducts maintenance testing of emergency, life safety, fire protection, elevator, and generator systems with staff and external contractors.
  • Inspects and evaluates facilities buildings; assesses conditions and prioritizes repairs.
  • Supervises outside contractor work for all facilities jobs.
  • Coordinates use of the Civic Center, which includes scheduling & arrangement of rooms, ensuring A/V equipment is functional and available, and assisting in developing contracts with non-public groups.
  • Prepares and administers the department’s budget reports, plans, and supporting documentation, responsible for cost control and payroll activities.
  • Prepare presentations, as needed, to Village Board and Commissions.
  • Researches and utilizes energy-efficient programs.
  • Prepares cost estimates and contract documents for facilities improvement and maintenance projects; solicits bids to secure fair and accurate pricing. Requisitions supplies, materials, and equipment through competitive bidding and by evaluating alternative methods or products to reduce operational costs; communicates with vendors regarding purchases of equipment and supplies; maintains appropriate inventory levels.
  • Oversees the work of custodial team in progress and upon completion; ensures all work procedures are in compliance with Village and Division standards and policies.
  • Hire, train, and motivate assigned personnel; initiate staff training programs; work constructively with employees to regularly evaluate job performance and drive accountability; recommend and administer discipline when appropriate.
  • Be readily accessible to Division staff to “troubleshoot” maintenance problems and make recommendations for correction.   Assist staff in understanding technical aspects of the building to which they are assigned and be willing to “roll up one’s sleeves” to assist with projects, including afterhours emergencies, as needed.
  • Contributes to the overall quality of the department’s service provision by developing and coordinating work teams and reviewing, recommending, and implementing improved policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public and staff; acts to promote a harmonious and effective workplace environment.



Candidates with an associate degree or higher in project management, construction, or a closely related field are encouraged to apply. Minimum of four (4) years of facilities, construction, or trades experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A valid Illinois motor vehicle operator’s license. Possession or ability to obtain EPA Certified Section 608- Universal Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Stationary Engineer License, Confined Space Entry and Non-Entry Rescue Certification, and other associated advanced training/certificates encouraged.



This is a full-time, exempt position with full benefits and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), a defined benefit retirement plan. Our comprehensive benefits package also includes health, dental, and vision insurance, life/AD&D coverage, flexible spending, transit, a 457 deferred compensation plan, paid time off, a wellness incentive program, and tuition reimbursement. The expected starting pay for this position is +/- $95,000 depending on qualifications. Current salary range is $87,686 to $122,760.

The general work hours are M-F, 7 am-3:30 pm, with an expectation for after-hour response to emergencies, project work, and periodic need to attend various meetings.
